Gabby's Story
Gabby Mayfield is one of the most brave and beautiful people you could ever meet. At just 20 years old, while pursuing her degree at Old Dominion University, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma for the first time. She underwent 6 months of ABVD treatment—an outpatient treatment with very little side effects—and was put into remission in August 2015.
The diagnosis was devastating for her family, especially when her oldest sister was also diagnosed with the same cancer just weeks after Gabby. Thankfully, her sister has remained in remission. But two years later, Gabby's cancer came back.
Treatment became much more intensive the second time around. She underwent ICE treatment—an inpatient treatment requiring up to four days in the hospital every three weeks. After completing three rounds of this treatment, she was placed in VCU's Cancer Center to receive a harsh round of chemo called BEAM, which destroyed her stem cells in her bones. She immediately began a stem cell transplant and was under strict monitoring, requiring her to live in the hospital for up to two months.
Through it all—the hospitals, being bald, the million needles, drugs, and other challenges—Gabby remained determined. She continued her education while receiving treatment, refusing to let cancer hold her back. She was scheduled to start her harsh treatment at VCU just six days after walking across the stage to graduate in May.
On November 27, 2017, Gabby celebrated a major victory, declaring: "I AM CANCER FREE..AGAIN." Her journey of fighting cancer not once, but twice, showcases her incredible strength, determination, and unwavering spirit.
Gabby is truly one of the most loyal, caring, and hilarious people you'll ever meet. Her courage in the face of adversity continues to inspire everyone who knows her story.
